Transform your slow PC into a speedy machine
Don't Replace - Upgrade Instead!
Your computer running slow? Takes forever to start? Programs feel sluggish? Before you spend hundreds on a new machine, consider this: upgrading key components can make your computer feel brand new for a fraction of the cost.
At Ness PC in Inverness, I've been upgrading computers for 30 years. I know exactly which upgrades give you the biggest performance boost for your money. A simple RAM upgrade or SSD installation can transform a frustratingly slow computer into one that's faster than many brand new machines.
💡 The Smart Money Option:
❌ Buy New Computer
Cost: £400-800
Result: New but possibly not much faster
Time: Need to transfer everything
Waste: Your current PC goes to landfill
✅ Upgrade Components
Cost: £100-250
Result: Dramatically faster performance
Time: Keep all your software & files
Green: Sustainable and economical
Popular Hardware Upgrades
SSD Upgrade
Replace your old hard drive with a modern SSD (Solid State Drive). This is the single best upgrade you can make. Your computer will boot in seconds, programs open instantly, and everything feels snappier.
Boot time: 2 minutes → 15 seconds
Best for: Everyone!
RAM Upgrade
Add more RAM (memory) to your computer. If you have 4GB or less, this upgrade is essential. Your computer can run more programs at once without slowing down. Stops the frustrating freezing when you have multiple tabs open.
Best for: Multitasking & browsing
Works with: SSD for best results
Graphics Card Upgrade
Upgrade your GPU for gaming or creative work. New graphics card transforms gaming performance, handles video editing better, and can drive multiple monitors. Only for desktop PCs (laptops have non-upgradeable graphics).
Not for: Office work / general use
Desktop only: Laptops can't upgrade GPU
Processor Upgrade
Upgrade your CPU for more processing power. This is more complex and expensive than other upgrades. Often limited by motherboard compatibility. Usually only worthwhile for desktop PCs, not laptops.
Expensive: May need new motherboard too
Advice: Often better to upgrade RAM/SSD first
Power Supply Upgrade
Replace your PSU with a better quality unit. Essential if you're adding a powerful graphics card. A good PSU is more efficient, quieter, and protects your components from power issues.
Desktop only: Laptops have integrated PSUs
Quality matters: Don't cheap out!
Additional Storage
Add a second drive for more space. Keep your fast SSD for Windows and programs, add a larger HDD or second SSD for storing files, photos, videos, and games. Best of both worlds!
HDD for storage: 1TB-4TB
Desktop only: Most laptops have one slot
What Can You Upgrade?
🖥️ Desktop PC Upgrades
✅ Easy to Upgrade:
- RAM (memory)
- Hard drive / SSD
- Graphics card
- Power supply
- Additional drives
💡 Why Desktops Are Better for Upgrades:
Desktop PCs are built with standard components that are easy to access and replace. Most upgrades take 15-30 minutes. You can keep upgrading the same desktop for years!
💻 Laptop Upgrades
⚠️ Limited Options:
- RAM (sometimes, depends on model)
- Hard drive / SSD (usually possible)
- ❌ Graphics card (not upgradeable)
- ❌ Processor (not upgradeable)
- ❌ Power supply (integrated)
💡 Laptop Limitations:
Laptops are compact, so most components are soldered to the motherboard. However, an SSD upgrade can still transform a slow laptop! I'll check if your specific model is upgradeable.

Should You Upgrade or Buy New?
The million-pound question! Here's my honest guidance:
✅ Upgrade Makes Sense When:
- Your computer is 3-7 years old
- It has an Intel i3/i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen processor
- You're happy with it except it's slow
- You only need speed boost, not new features
- Budget-conscious and want to save money
- You have expensive software licenses tied to this PC
- Desktop PC (more upgradeable than laptops)
- Total upgrade cost under 40% of new PC price
❌ Buy New Computer When:
- Computer is 8+ years old
- Has old processor (Pentium, Celeron, Core 2 Duo)
- Multiple components failing
- You need new features (touchscreen, lighter weight, etc.)
- Laptop with non-upgradeable RAM and old HDD
- Motherboard or other core component has failed
- Upgrade costs would be 50%+ of new PC
- You've already upgraded it before with little improvement
💡 My Honest Promise:
I'll always give you my honest opinion. If I think buying a new computer makes more financial sense than upgrading, I'll tell you - even though it means I lose the upgrade job. Your trust is worth more than a single sale. That's why people have been coming to me for 30 years.

Common Upgrade Questions
Will I lose my files when you upgrade to an SSD?
No! I clone your existing hard drive to the new SSD. Windows, programs, files - everything transfers automatically. It's like nothing changed except everything is faster. However, I always recommend having backups before any work, just to be safe.
How long do upgrades take?
Once I have the parts: RAM upgrades are same-day, SSD upgrades take 2-3 hours (cloning takes time), graphics cards are same-day. Overall turnaround including ordering parts is usually 2-4 days.
Can you upgrade my 10-year-old laptop?
Maybe! Some older laptops can still benefit from an SSD upgrade. Bring it in and I'll check if it's upgradeable and whether it's worth doing. I'll be honest if I think your money is better spent on a replacement.
What's the single best upgrade I can do?
SSD, hands down. If you're still using an old mechanical hard drive, upgrading to an SSD makes the biggest noticeable difference. It's night and day. After that, adding more RAM if you have less than 8GB.
Will upgrading RAM make my computer faster?
It depends. If you currently have 4GB or less, yes - massive difference. If you have 8GB and only browse the web and use Office, probably not much benefit. If you have 8GB and multitask heavily or edit photos/videos, upgrading to 16GB will help. I'll assess your actual usage.
Do upgrades come with a warranty?
Yes! 3 months on my labour and installation. New parts come with manufacturer warranties (typically 2-5 years depending on the component). If anything goes wrong, bring it back and I'll sort it out.
