Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
That means no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support. If you're still using Windows 10, you need to act now.
What Does "End of Life" Actually Mean?
When Microsoft ends support for Windows 10, it doesn't mean your computer will suddenly stop working. However, continuing to use Windows 10 after October 14, 2025 means:
No More Security Updates
This is the big one. When hackers discover new vulnerabilities in Windows 10, Microsoft won't fix them. Your PC becomes increasingly vulnerable to viruses, ransomware, and attacks.
No Bug Fixes
If Windows 10 develops problems after October 2025, Microsoft won't fix them. You'll be stuck with any issues that arise.
No Microsoft Support
Microsoft will no longer provide technical support for Windows 10 issues. (Though here at Ness PC in Inverness, we'll still help you!)
Software Compatibility Issues
New software and hardware will gradually stop supporting Windows 10. Eventually, your favourite programs won't work anymore.

Not every PC can upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has strict requirements:

💡 Simple rule: If your PC is from 2018 or newer, it probably meets the requirements. Older than that? It's hit or miss.
How to Check if Your PC is Compatible

- Download Microsoft's PC Health Check app from Microsoft's website
- Run the program
- Click "Check now" under Windows 11
- It will tell you if your PC can upgrade and what's blocking it if not

What If My PC Can't Run Windows 11?
Don't panic! You have several options:
Your Options for Incompatible PCs:
1. Hardware Upgrades (Sometimes Possible)
Depending on what's missing, I might be able to upgrade your PC to meet requirements. Common fixes include adding a TPM module, enabling TPM in BIOS settings, or upgrading RAM and storage. Cost: £50-200 typically.
2. Buy a Refurbished PC
A refurbished business-class PC with Windows 11 pre-installed is often cheaper than trying to upgrade an old machine. These typically cost £200-400 and come with warranties. I can advise on good options.
3. Buy a New PC
If your PC is 7+ years old, a new one might make more sense. Modern PCs are faster, more reliable, and come with Windows 11. Prices start around £350 for basic models. I can help you choose one that fits your needs and budget.
4. Extended Security Updates (For Businesses)
Microsoft offers paid Extended Security Updates for businesses that need more time. This costs money annually and is really only for businesses with specific needs. Not recommended for home users.
Common Questions from Inverness Customers
Can I just keep using Windows 10?
Technically yes, but it's risky. Without security updates, you're vulnerable to viruses, ransomware, and hackers. It's like leaving your front door unlocked - you might be fine, but why take the risk?
Will Windows 10 stop working on October 15?
No! Your PC will continue working normally. You just won't get any more updates from Microsoft. Think of it like an old phone that still works but doesn't get new security patches.
How much does upgrading to Windows 11 cost?
The Windows 11 upgrade itself is FREE if your PC is compatible. If you need my help to upgrade it, I charge £50-75 for a standard upgrade including data backup, driver updates, and setup. If your PC needs hardware upgrades first, that's extra depending on what's needed.
Will I lose my files when upgrading?
No, Microsoft's upgrade process keeps your files, programs, and settings. However, I ALWAYS recommend backing up important data first - just in case. I can do this for you as part of my upgrade service.
What if I don't like Windows 11?
You have 10 days to roll back to Windows 10 if you don't like Windows 11. After that, it's more difficult but still possible. Honestly though, most people adapt to Windows 11 within a week or two once they get used to the new layout.
My PC is only 5 years old but won't run Windows 11 - why?
Microsoft's requirements are strict. The TPM 2.0 requirement is the most common blocker. Some 5-6 year old PCs have TPM but it's disabled in BIOS - I can check and enable it if present. If not, we'll discuss alternatives.
