Learn how to change your default web browser in Windows 11. Simple steps to set Chrome, Firefox, or any browser as your default
How to Change Your Default Browser in Windows 11
Want to use Chrome, Firefox, or another browser instead of Microsoft Edge? Windows 11 makes this a bit more complicated than it should be, but here's exactly how to do it.
Method 1: Through Settings (Official Method)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings
- Click Apps in the left sidebar
- Select Default apps
- Scroll down and find your preferred browser (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Opera)
- Click on the browser name
- You'll see a list of file types and link types
- For each type (HTM, HTML, PDF, SHTML, SVG, WEBP, XHT, XHTML, HTTP, HTTPS), click and select your browser
- Repeat for all file/protocol types
Yes, you have to do this for each file type individually. Microsoft doesn't make it easy!
Method 2: Quick Method When Clicking a Link
When you click a link and Edge opens:
- Look for the prompt at the top of Edge
- Click "Always use this app" checkbox
- Select your preferred browser from the list
- Click OK
This sets the default for that specific link type.
Method 3: Set Default in Your Browser
Most browsers will prompt you to become the default browser.
Google Chrome:
- Open Chrome
- Click the three dots (top right)
- Go to Settings
- Click Default browser in the left sidebar
- Click Make default
- This opens Windows Settings - follow the prompts
Mozilla Firefox:
- Open Firefox
- Click the menu button (three lines)
- Select Settings
- Scroll to General
- Click Make Default
- Follow Windows prompts
Opera:
- Open Opera
- Go to Settings (Alt + P)
- Click Default browser in left menu
- Click Make Opera my default browser
Brave:
- Open Brave
- Click the menu (three lines, top right)
- Go to Settings
- Click Get Started
- Click Make default
Setting Default for Specific File Types
You can choose different browsers for different file types:
For HTML Files:
- Right-click any .html file
- Select Open with
- Choose Choose another app
- Select your browser
- Check "Always use this app"
- Click OK
For PDF Files:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps
- Search for PDF in the search box
- Click the current default (probably Edge)
- Select your preferred app
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Browser Not Listed in Default Apps:
- Make sure the browser is actually installed
- Open the browser at least once
- Restart your PC
- Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps to verify installation
Changes Don't Stick:
- Run Windows Update - install all updates
- Try restarting your PC
- Check if you have admin rights
- Scan for malware (some redirect browsers)
Edge Keeps Opening Instead:
Microsoft has special exceptions where Edge will always open:
- Windows widgets
- Some Windows Search results
- Microsoft News and Interests
- Some Microsoft apps
Third-party tools like EdgeDeflector or MSEdgeRedirect can bypass this, but use at your own risk.
Understanding the Different File Types
When setting defaults, you'll see these options:
- .htm / .html - Web page files
- .pdf - PDF documents
- .svg - Scalable vector graphics
- .xht / .xhtml - XML HTML files
- HTTP / HTTPS - Web protocols (links)
- FTP - File transfer protocol
For full browser functionality, set your preferred browser for all of these.
