How to Properly Uninstall Programs in Windows 11

Uninstalling programs seems simple, but leftover files can clutter your system. Here's how to remove programs completely in Windows 11.

Method 1: Settings App (Recommended)

The cleanest way to uninstall most programs:

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
  2. Click Apps in the left sidebar
  3. Select Installed apps
  4. Find the program you want to remove
  5. Click the three dots next to it
  6. Select Uninstall
  7. Click Uninstall again to confirm
  8. Follow any on-screen prompts

Quick Search:

Use the search box at the top to quickly find programs in long lists.

Method 2: Start Menu

Fastest way for pinned programs:

  1. Click Start
  2. Find the program (or search for it)
  3. Right-click the program
  4. Select Uninstall
  5. Confirm the uninstallation

Method 3: Control Panel (Legacy Programs)

Some older programs only appear here:

  1. Search for Control Panel in Start
  2. Click Programs and Features
  3. Find your program in the list
  4. Right-click it
  5. Select Uninstall or Uninstall/Change
  6. Follow the uninstaller wizard

Method 4: Program's Own Uninstaller

Some programs have dedicated uninstallers:

  1. Navigate to: C:\Program Files\ or C:\Program Files (x86)\
  2. Find the program's folder
  3. Look for uninstall.exe or similar
  4. Double-click to run
  5. Follow the prompts

Removing Stubborn Programs

When Uninstall Doesn't Work:

1. Use Safe Mode:

  1. Restart your PC
  2. Hold Shift while clicking Restart
  3. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings
  4. Click Restart
  5. Press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode
  6. Try uninstalling again

2. Third-Party Uninstaller Tools:

  • Revo Uninstaller (free version available)
  • IObit Uninstaller (free)
  • Geek Uninstaller (portable, free)

These tools can remove leftover files and registry entries.

Clean Up After Uninstalling

Remove Leftover Files:

  1. Check: C:\Program Files\
  2. Check: C:\Program Files (x86)\
  3. Check: C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\
  4. Delete any remaining program folders

Note: To see AppData folder, enable hidden files:

  • Open File Explorer
  • Click View > Show > Hidden items

Clean Up Registry (Advanced Users Only):

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type regedit and press Enter
  3. Press Ctrl + F to search
  4. Search for the program name
  5. Delete related entries (backup first!)

Warning: Editing the registry incorrectly can damage Windows. Create a backup first or use third-party tools instead.

Uninstalling Built-in Windows Apps

Some Windows 11 apps can be removed:
