Why Won't My PC Run Windows 11? System Requirements Explained

Wondering why Windows 11 won't install on your computer? We explain Windows 11 system requirements and what to do if your PC isn't compatible.

Windows 11 Compatibility: Why Your PC May Not Qualify

Many of our Inverness customers ask why their perfectly good PC won't run Windows 11. Here's the complete explanation and your options.

The Main Culprits: TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot

The two most common reasons PCs fail Windows 11 compatibility checks are:

1. TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module)

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 for security. Many older PCs have TPM 1.2 or no TPM at all.

How to check:

  • Press Windows + R
  • Type tpm.msc and press Enter
  • Check the TPM version listed

2. Secure Boot

Your PC must support UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Older PCs use Legacy BIOS instead.

Complete Windows 11 Requirements

ComponentRequirement
Processor 1 GHz, 2+ cores, 64-bit compatible CPU
RAM 4 GB minimum
Storage 64 GB minimum
System Firmware UEFI, Secure Boot capable
TPM Version 2.0
Graphics DirectX 12, WDDM 2.0
Display 720p, 9" diagonal minimum

Check Your PC Compatibility

  1. Download Microsoft's PC Health Check app
  2. Run the application
  3. Click "Check now" under Windows 11
  4. Review the detailed results

Solutions If Your PC Isn't Compatible

Option 1: Enable TPM in BIOS

Some PCs have TPM 2.0 but it's disabled:

  • Restart and enter BIOS (usually F2, F10, or Del)
  • Look for Security or Advanced settings
  • Find TPM or PTT (Intel) / fTPM (AMD)
  • Enable it and save changes

Option 2: Hardware Upgrade

For newer PCs (2016+), we may be able to add a TPM module to your motherboard.

Option 3: Stay on Windows 10

Windows 10 receives support until October 2025. You have time to plan an upgrade.

Option 4: New PC

If your PC is 7+ years old, a new computer might be more cost-effective than upgrading.

Unofficial Workarounds (Not Recommended)

While bypass methods exist, we don't recommend them because:

  • You won't receive all security updates
  • Some features may not work
  • Microsoft may block updates in future
  • No official support available

Ness PC in Inverness can check your computer's compatibility, enable TPM if possible, or advise on the best upgrade path for your needs and budget.
